LIVING STILL IN SOUND – Chanting In Kirtan With Prabhupada

I am making these wonderful kirtans of Srila Prabhupada available so devotees can chant with Srila Prabhupada in his presence of transcendental sound vibration. In these very troubled times such association will purify the heart and elevate the spirit of the world.

“The potency of transcendental sound is never minimized because the vibrator is apparently absent.” (Prabhupada from Srimad Bhagavatam 2.9.8)

“He reasons ill who tells that Vaisnavas die when thou art living still in sound. The Vaisnavas die to live and living try to spread the holy name around.” (Bhaktivinode Thakur.)

KIRTANA’S WITH SRILA PRABHUPADA

When the mantra is chanted by a pure devotee of the Lord in love, it has the greatest efficacy on hearers, and as such this chanting should be heard from the lips of a pure devotee of the Lord, so that immediate effects can be achieved. As far as possible, chanting from the lips of nondevotees should be avoided. Milk touched by the lips of a serpent has poisonous effects. (Prabhupada From S.S.R.)

Srila Prabhupada’s kirtana’s are very potent and perfection of life is attained by glorifying the Lord in Srila Prabhupada’s association.

Perfection of life is attained simply by glorifying the Lord in association with a self-realized devotee of the Lord. (Prabhupada S.B. Intro.)

Dhoop arati may be performed in the morning if there is unusually great complaining, but it is better to hold full arati, but quietly, as in Bombay they play a tape-recording of myself singing arati softly and hold full arati.

(Prabhupada Letter to: Upendra, Calcutta, 19 February, 1972)

So we should associate by the vibration, and not by the physical presence. That is real association. Sabdad anavrtti. By sound. Just like we are touching Krsna immediately by sound. Sound vibration. So we should give more stress on the sound vibration, either of Krsna or of the spiritual master. Then we’ll feel happy and no separation. (S.P. Lecture, 18/8/68,Montreal.)

So although a physical body is not present, the vibration should be accepted as the presence of the spiritual master, vibration. What we have heard from the spiritual master, that is living.  (S.P. Lecture, 13/1/69,Los Angeles.)

So far men for working here in the temple, do not worry about it. I have already some American young men with me and they strictly vegetarian. Besides that there are many Indian students here and I shall be able to recruit workers both from Indian and Americans. I am confident of this. I may cite herewith one incidence which happened yesterday evening. I have prepared some Tape record of my personal Kirtana. When one of this Tape record was played the audience became practically charmed by that although not a single word of my language was understandable by them. So I am confident of the statement of Srila Haridasa Thakura that the transcendental sound of Lord Caitanya’s Harinama can do good even to the birds and the beasts. Undoubtedly these Americans are habituated to take nonvegetarian food but I am confident that they can be trained up to our line of living because they are sincere to take up the training.

(Prabhupada Letter to: Tirtha Maharaja, New York, 4 February, 1966)

So this formula, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare, this sound vibration, you can practice it. It is not difficult. There is no secret. I don’t say that “I have got a secret mantra which I shall give you, and you pay me fifty dollars” or like that. It is open secret. You have simply to accept kindly. Then you see the result. There is no loss on your part, but the gain is very great. Why don’t you try it? I request you, most humbly I request you that you kindly chant these sixteen names–Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama… We have got our record also. If you want to practice, you can play the record and it will be very easy. So this is my humble request to you American ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls. It is not difficult, but it has got a sublime effect. You will find it. If you practice it, you will find it. (Prabhupada Lecture Engagement and Prasada Distribution, Boston, April 26, 1969)

Now on that I shall lead the kirtana. I shall first of all chant, and our devotees should respond as usual. And with the devotees Mr. Ginsberg will also be amongst our devotees, and the public will be requested to follow this response. In this way there shall be kirtana performance for at least half an hour. For our men I want four mrdangas and twelve karatalas or cymbals. If Kirtanananda can play the harmonium melodiously along with the chanting, it will be nice. If somebody can play the tamboura, that will be still more nice. But they should be rhythmically played. So I do not know how many devotees are there or how many mrdangas are there, but we will require four mrdangas. If this is deficient now in men or mrdangas, then you should arrange for that by calling New York men and Buffalo men. Recently I have made one record in Los Angeles, so in trying to train our men in that rhythm is not difficult. Just arrange for sixteen men; four mrdangas, harmonium, tamboura, and the rest playing karatalas. If we can perform kirtana following the recently made recording, it will be marvelous. The summary is that you should make the above preparations for when the advertised meeting is held.

(loud tape of Prabhupada, “Hare Krishna Happening” Album, chanting in background)
Rupanuga: …and how we danced at the end? You were dancing with karatalas when you were listening to the record.
Prabhupada: Now we have got our own studio. We also do. What is the name, Allen?
Rupanuga: Ginsberg?
Prabhupada: No, no, no.
Rupanuga: Oh, Coleman.
Prabhupada: Oh, Coleman, yes. Last time in India, he gave me twenty-five thousand rupees. (laughs)
Rupanuga: He did?! Wow, twenty-five thousand! He still has the original tape of this record.
Prabhupada: Let him now do. He wanted to pay me something, but he never paid.
Pusta Krsna: I sent Krsna-kanti, he made a, recorded this in South Africa and printed it. It’s not actually legal, but we did it because we didn’t think it would… This is the most wonderful record for spreading Krsna consciousness because you are chanting Hare Krsna. So pure.
Prabhupada: Yes. Originally.
Pusta Krsna: People can more appreciate Hare Krsna than these bhajanas, because they do not understand.
Prabhupada: Bhajana, they do… (break) …Brahmananda, you…
Rupanuga: Brahmananda, yes, he’s singing. Satsvarupa. Hayagriva was there also, and Jadurani was there. We were playing all kinds of instruments, all kinds of things. We were playing bells and sticks.
Prabhupada: Kirtanananda was playing sitar.
Rupanuga: Yes.
Prabhupada: And I was playing a broken mrdanga.
Rupanuga: It was wood. Was it wooden?
Pusta Krsna: I think they had that at the New Vrindaban farm.
Rupanuga: We had borrowed it from an Indian man.
Pusta Krsna: It was a little one-sided drum?
Rupanuga: No, it was a big, two-sided wooden drum. That was another drum. (break)
Prabhupada: That was 1966.
Rupanuga: This record, yes. October, November. November or December, near Christmas. Acyutananda was there also.
